Dear Healthcare IT Insider,
Are proliferating passwords and the need to remember them driving you crazy? Does it seem like every other patient who registers for an imaging exam is named Bill Smith? Do you get chills down your spine wondering if your imaging center or radiology department's operations will survive the scrutiny of the HIPAA police?
If any of these thoughts have crossed your mind, you will want to read this newsletter's Insider Exclusive about biometric identification -- and then decide for yourself whether this technology is the next big trend in imaging informatics.
Crystal ball gazing was rampant at the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) annual meeting held at the beginning of the month in suburban Washington, DC. Senior editor Erik L. Ridley attended the opening address discussing top trends in informatics.
Lots of practical advice was also dispensed. Attendees learned that social networks offer both opportunities and pitfalls; click here to read our coverage of this session. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration offered tips about its regulatory review process to imaging informatics inventors. Another session presented an example of the power of data mining, discussing its use in analyzing emergency department image viewing trends.
Not one, but three sessions were dedicated to the achievable quest of meeting meaningful use requirements. Read about the advice offered by Dr. Keith Dreyer, PhD, by clicking here.
Outside the SIIM venue, the U.S. Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) heard power users and medical specialists vent about proposed stage 2 meaningful use rules, and the ONC was criticized by the U.S. Office of Inspector General for failing to incorporate general IT security rules.
We'll be publishing more coverage from the SIIM meeting for the Healthcare IT Digital Community over the next several weeks. Watch for it!
