House hearing to eye federal IT purchasing

The U.S. House of Representatives' Oversight and Government Reform Committee is starting the new 113th Congress by scheduling a hearing on January 22 to focus on "the wasteful and dysfunctional fashion in which the federal government acquires information technology systems and services."

The public hearing -- titled "Wasting Information Technology Dollars: How Can the Federal Government Reform its IT Investment Strategy?" -- will be streamed live starting at 1 p.m. EST on oversight.house.gov. Steven VanRoekel, the federal chief information officer of the White House Office of Management and Budget, and David Powner, director of information technology management issues at the General Accountability Office, are two of the witnesses scheduled to testify. The hearing will be chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), the committee's chairman.

This committee has also created a new subcommittee on energy policy, healthcare, and entitlements. It will be chaired by Rep. James Lankford (R-OK).
