PACS displays need to provide high-quality performance to maintain diagnostic accuracy and optimize reporting of imaging studies. In particular, three fundamental display parameters -- minimum and maximum luminance level, grayscale visualization, and spatial resolution -- have a significant effect on image quality, according to Dr. Calogero Cicero of General Hospital "San Bassiano" in Italy.
"An important objective to pursue while choosing and acquiring new instrumentation is to have a deep knowledge about the correct reproduction of the radiological images among the monitors available on the market," Cicero told AuntMinnie.com. "This is crucial in order to direct the selection of new instrumentation based not only on economical convenience, but more importantly on performance."
As part of a multi-institutional study, the researchers sought to evaluate the impact of monitor characteristics and settings in identifying cerebral infarction on brain CT exams.
"This would allow us not only to obtain a more optimized procedure for the clinical reporting [of imaging], but also to rationalize the choice and the purchase of new workstations [for] reporting," Cicero said.
