DENVER - A new artificial intelligence (AI) challenge aimed at spurring development of algorithms for detecting pneumothorax on x-rays is among the highlights at the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) annual meeting, said SIIM Chair Dr. Jim Whitfill in a video interview.
The challenge, which was launched at SIIM 2019 in partnership with the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Society of Thoracic Radiology, will award a total of $30,000 in prize money for the best-performing algorithms. In just three days, 360 teams have signed up to participate in the challenge, according to Whitfill. Interestingly, many of the competitors come from outside of healthcare.
"These are people that do artificial intelligence in other areas that really want to kind of break the code and do some healthcare work," he said.
Whitfill also discussed a dedicated learning lab track for AI at the meeting, as well as hot applications for AI in radiology.
"We're really starting to see maybe a little more realistic approach to what AI can bring [to radiology]," he said.
Enterprise imaging also continues to be an active area, Whitfill noted.
