Healthcare information systems vendor Change Healthcare announced new artificial intelligence (AI) software that can extract diagnostic information from text in electronic health records (EHRs).
The first use of the software will be within InterQual AutoReview, which automates medical necessity reviews using real-time data from EHRs. A medical necessity review can take anywhere from 10-30 minutes and puts a significant burden on administrative staff; using InterQual AutoReview reduces the load by 75%, the firm said.
The software extracts structured data such as labs, medications, and vital signs, directly from the EHR. It can also identify diagnostic information, such as the presence of pneumonia, bowel obstruction, pancreatitis, and other conditions, from unstructured radiology reports, Change Healthcare added.
