Dear PACS Insider,

In today's imaging environment, institutions face an increasing number of digital studies, as well as external referrals and patient transfers. DICOM's Part 10: Media Storage and File Format for Media Interchange and IHE's Portable Data for Imaging (PDI) integration profile offer a method of handling patient CDs, but users must still come up with a way to integrate the data with their own records and workflow.

In response, the IHE initiative has created an Import Reconciliation Workflow (IRWF) integration profile. IRWF provides a methodology for importing DICOM data into your local PACS network, according to Cynthia Levy of Cedara Software. Levy discussed IRWF in a joint presentation with Andrew Casertano of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at the SCAR 2006 annual meeting.
