Over the next five years, hospitals, physicians, pharmaceutical companies, and insurance providers will spend nearly $43 billion on telecommunications services, with wireless services used by hospitals and physicians showing the fastest growth.
The study from Boston-based Insight Research concluded that an aging population and worker shortages are two primary reasons why healthcare will rely on telecommunications services. It also projects that the U.S. healthcare telecommunications services market will grow from $6.3 billion in 2006 to $8.1 billion in 2011. Spending on wireless technology is expected to grow at more than twice the overall rate.
