HCFA releases new outpatient payment system

The Health Care Financing Administration has released its new Medicare prospective payment system (PPS) for hospital outpatient services. The final regulations were published in the April 7 edition of the Federal Register.

The new system is part of HCFA's ongoing effort to control healthcare costs by reining in spending in the hospital outpatient environment, which was not covered under earlier PPS rules. HCFA is expected to implement the new system on July 1.
