The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine has named neuroradiologist Mahmud Mossa-Basha, MD, chair of UAB Radiology, effective November 1, 2025.

Mossa-Basha currently serves as professor of radiology, neurology, and neuroscience, and Ellsworth C. and Nancy D. Alvord Endowed Chair in Neuro-oncology at the University of Washington (UW) Medicine in Seattle. He also serves as vice chair of clinical research and of clinical transformation.
In the announcement, UAB Medicine recognized Mossa-Basha's accomplishments as a distinguished investigator, an RSNA-honored educator, and senior editor of the American Journal of Neuroradiology, among others.
Mossa-Basha earned his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine, completing his residency in diagnostic radiology at Henry Ford Hospital and a two-year diagnostic neuroradiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.
His prior leadership roles at UW Medicine include vice chair of clinical operations and of quality and safety, director of MRI, and chief of radiology. In these capacities, he spearheaded pivotal efforts in AI implementation, validation, and development, and enhanced extramural funding, according to the UAB.
Mossa-Basha has helped drive progress in advanced imaging of atherosclerotic disease and vasculopathies, with notable contributions in vessel wall imaging, stroke diagnostics, and vasculopathy imaging, the UAB highlighted.
