U.S. investigators are beginning to cast doubt on whether there is a connection between a San Antonio radiologist and the September 11 hijackers. FBI spokesperson Rene Salinas said today that the agency had communicated some misinformation regarding radiology resident Dr. Al-Bader Al-Hazmi, according to an article that appeared today on WRAL.com and Click2houston.com.
Al-Hazmi, a fifth-year resident at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, was taken into custody by U.S. agents and is being held in New York. Published reports said the FBI suspected Al-Hazmi of having connections with Ayub Khan and Mohammed Azmath, two men who were reportedly on a flight from Newark, NJ, that was grounded in St. Louis soon after the September 11 attacks on New York City and Washington, DC. Khan and Azmath were arrested on a train headed for San Antonio, and accused of carrying box cutters and $5,000 in cash, according to various reports.
The FBI's Salinas said the agency was no longer concerned that Al-Hazmi reportedly bought a flight ticket for September 22, according to WRAL.com and Click2houston.com. The FBI's Salinas also said that Al-Hazmi has no connection to Khan and Azmath. A United Press International story today said that while the FBI believes further attacks are planned, evidence of a second wave of attacks planned for September 22 is no longer credible.
Some of the suspects now being held for questioning will be cleared in the near future, the FBI told WRAL.com and click2houston.com.
