Driven by contributions from its acquisition of Amersham Health, multimodality vendor GE Healthcare of Waukesha, WI, saw its sales grow 32% in 2004 (end-December 31), while profits grew strongly as well.
For the year, GE's healthcare business posted revenues of $13.456 billion, compared with sales of $10.198 billion the year before. The division's profit was $2.286 billion, up 34% compared with profit of $1.701 billion the previous year. The 2004 numbers represent three quarters of contribution from Amersham, as GE completed the acquisition in April 2004.
For the fourth quarter, the healthcare division had sales of $4.259 billion, up 28% compared with sales of $3.32 billion in the same period of 2003. The segment's profit was $860 million, up 50% compared with profit of $572 million the year before.
GE said that fourth-quarter highlights included 25% growth in orders over the fourth quarter of 2003, with 9% growth in services, 15% growth in ultrasound, and $700 million in growth in GE Healthcare Biosciences, the company's new name for the Amersham business. The company also touted its launch of the Volume CT multislice CT scanner, a 3-tesla MRI unit, and Vivid I portable ultrasound system.
