Dear Business & Industry Insider,
A Los Angeles-area start-up called Imaging3 hopes to take three-dimensional imaging to a new level with a system that acquires 3D images in real-time. The firm expects the new system it's developing, called Dominion, to extend the benefits of 3D imaging in a variety of real-time applications.
Current imaging technology overwhelmingly relies on acquiring data in two dimensions. While this has worked well for the traditional workflow model of image review after the exam takes place, limitations arise in a real-time environment such as image-guided interventional procedures. Reconstructing 3D images from 2D data after the exam doesn't help much for real-time procedures, the company believes.
Imaging3 hopes its Dominion system will find a role in applications where real-time 3D imaging is critically needed, such as guiding surgical interventions and trauma assessment. The company is developing add-on modules that make the unit more versatile, such as a CT-emulation mode.
