Dear AuntMinnie Member,
If you frequently request reimbursement for 3D image postprocessing and reconstruction, you should be aware of recent changes in current procedural terminology (CPT) codes for advanced visualization techniques.
Dear AuntMinnie Member,
Two new CPT codes have been added to replace CPT Code 76375, the workhorse
3D code, which has been declared obsolete as of December 31, 2005, according to
an article by contributing writer Cynthia Keen that we're featuring in our Advanced
Visualization Digital Community.
The change in U.S. billing procedures reflects the rapid growth of 3D imaging and its widespread adoption throughout medical imaging. For example, the number of claims filed for the now-expired code 76375 more than doubled between 2002 and 2004, according to the story.
The new codes also are a sign of the increasingly automated nature of 3D postprocessing and reconstruction. One new code -- which has a higher reimbursement rate -- is designed for procedures that require postprocessing or an independent workstation, while the other code -- which not surprisingly pays less -- is designed for situations in which the 3D reconstruction is more automated.
