The sluggish global economy continued to take its toll on GE Healthcare of Chalfont St. Giles, U.K., in the third quarter (end-September 30).
Third-quarter revenue decreased 9% to $3.8 billion, compared with $4.19 billion in the third quarter of 2008. Profit slipped 20% to $508 million, compared with $634 million in the same quarter a year ago.
Parent company General Electric also reported that GE Healthcare's third-quarter orders decreased to $3.9 billion, down 9% from the same quarter of 2008. The segment's equipment backlog totaled $3.4 billion in the third quarter of 2009.
For the nine-month period, revenue declined 9% to $11.3 billion, compared with $12.5 billion in the same period of 2008. Profit was off 20% to $1.5 billion, compared with $1.8 billion in the first nine months of 2008.
