Interpretation discrepancies spark Canadian rereads

Cancer test discrepancies have sparked the rereading of thousands of imaging tests of patients seen at a Canadian hospital, according to an article in the Vancouver Sun.

Thirty radiologists from Vancouver General Hospital have reread 275 cancer-related images of patients whose scans were originally read by Dr. Claude Vezina, a radiologist at Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace, British Columbia, the Sun reported; the radiologists will now reread other tests, including CT scans, ultrasounds, and x-rays.

Vezina is on voluntary leave while his work is being audited, according to the Sun. More than 8,000 radiology exams acquired between October and January are being reinterpreted. The exams were performed for 5,278 patients.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia has been notified of the investigation, the Sun reported.
