Varex posts revenue gain, net loss in fiscal Q3

Record global sales of CT tubes and double-digit sales gains in its oncology and mammography imaging markets helped digital x-ray vendor Varex Imaging to a 3% increase in revenue for its 2019 fiscal third quarter. Charges and higher tax expenses led to a net loss, however.

For the period (end-June 30), Varex had revenues of $196.7 million, compared with $191.2 million in the 2018 fiscal third quarter. The company noted that strong sales performance in CT tubes and in its oncology and mammography imaging markets were offset by significantly lower sales of radiographic detectors.

Varex had a third-quarter net loss of $1.3 million, compared with net income of $3.9 million in the same period a year ago. Higher tax expenses and $7 million of restructuring and impairment charges in connection with its recently announced plans to close its Santa Clara, CA, digital detector manufacturing facility contributed to the net loss for the quarter, according to the firm.
