A radiologist in Gaza told his story of mistreatment during his seven months in Israeli detention on the July 16 edition of the National Public Radio (NPR) show Morning Edition.
Amer Nassar, MD, said he was beaten while detained. Israel has incarcerated thousands of Gazans since the October 7 Hamas attack. According to the NPR interview, Nassar said he was sheltering with his family in a United Nations school in December when Israeli troops detained him and others.
Nassar said he was beaten by soldiers and subjected to violent interrogation that attempted to coerce him into confessing that he was a member of Hamas. After a month in an Israeli detention center, Nassar said he spent six months in a desert prison and was prevented from communicating with the outside world. He lived in tents with about 150 other Palestinian detainees, he added.
Nassar in the interview also said he developed a skin condition and lost about 88 lb from malnutrition but was denied medical treatment. He was eventually cleared of being suspected of terrorist associations.
