FDA provides update of Cures Act

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has provided an update on the 21st Century Cures Act.

The Cures Act gave the FDA a new set of authorities and resources to adapt the agency's policies and organizational structure and also authorized $6.3 billion in funding last year.

FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb provided testimony before the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce on the agency's implementation of the act on November 30. Timely implementation of the legislation is one of FDA's highest priorities and will aid the transformation of medicine via new technologies, he said in his statement.

"The reauthorization of the user fees and more notably the Cures Act, offers FDA a new platform to fashion these scientific advances into practical treatments for patients," he said.

FDA will soon release a document that will take full measure of how the agency is expanding on the provisions in the act, he added.
