Video-capsule manufacturer Given Imaging of Yoqneam, Israel, reported that U.S. healthcare insurance provider Humana has revised its capsule endoscopy reimbursement policy covering capsule endoscopy for the initial diagnosis of patients with suspected Crohn's disease following inconclusive small-bowel follow-through.
Under the revised policy, effective immediately, no endoscopy procedure is required prior to capsule endoscopy for Humana's 7 million covered lives.
The firm said that Humana's is the first coverage policy to follow the recommendation of a recent economic outcomes study from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia that Given's PillCam SB be used as a first-line diagnostic tool for patients with suspected Crohn's disease.
