Insurance regulators in Florida and Oregon have shut down several companies that were allegedly selling bogus malpractice insurance policies.
In Tallahassee, an immediate final order was issued against the following unlicensed entities: Professional Liability Insurance Co. (PLIC), Unimed, Medical Risks Associates, RPG, and Physicians Malpractice Analyst. Unimed is based in Atlanta; the other companies are based in Bermuda.
The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation determined that these companies were not registered to offer insurance in Florida or in any other U.S. state. The department also advised that medical providers seeking liability coverage should check with their office before enacting a policy.
