Study finds strong growth in outpatient imaging

Imaging procedures performed in outpatient hospital settings climbed 44% from 1999 to 2001, according to an outpatient market report released by market research firm Solucient. Among specific imaging modalities, PET grew nearly 26% over the period, with the vast majority of growth achieved in 2001.

The Evanston, IL-based firm also reported that outpatient MRI procedures increased nearly 52%, with abdominal and pelvis scans experiencing particularly strong growth. CT volume was boosted nearly 40%. Colonoscopy, alternative care, and osteoporosis screening were other key growth areas in outpatient settings during the three-year period, Solucient said.
