The Walter Reed Army Medical Center will be shutting its doors, but the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) program will continue.
Last week, the Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) voted to close the Washington, DC-based hospital and merge it with National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, to become the Walter Reed National Medical Center.
A decision is still pending as to whether AFIP, and the RadPath program, will also move to the Bethesda facility or will be located elsewhere, according to a statement by the American College of Radiology.
Another facility slated for shutdown is Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. This hospital will consolidate medical operations for the region at a new San Antonio Regional Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston.
BRAC's recommendations for base closures will be sent to President George W. Bush on September 8.
