Dear Imaging Center Insider,
Not too long ago, the U.S. radiology market operated on the belief that there were too few radiologists to satisfy demand and that the situation was only going to worsen. Practices seeking new talent bid up the market for new hires with attractive incentive packages and accelerated paths to partnership.
What a difference a few years has made. According to a recent study by American College of Radiology economists Cristian Meghea, Ph.D., and Jonathan Sunshine, Ph.D., there may now be a balance between the supply and demand for radiologists.
Their research was based on a 2003 ACR survey that queried radiologists as to their desire for a greater or lighter workload. The duo assumed that a desire for less work indicated a shortage of radiologists, while a desire for more work indicated a surplus.
Sunshine and Meghea also classified their data analysis by age, sex, type of practice, and geographical region, which produced some interesting variations in the overall study results.
