Utah's House of Representatives has passed a bill (Utah House Bill 238) that would allow a radiologist assistant (RA) to perform radiological procedures under the supervision of a radiologist.
The bill would establish licensure and continuing education requirements for a radiologist assistant, define the scope of practice for a radiologist assistant, and amend the current membership of the state's Radiologic Technologist Licensing Board to include one licensed radiologist assistant.
The bill also allows for individuals certified by the state Certification Board for Radiology Practitioner Assistants to be licensed as radiologist assistants.
The measure has the support of the Utah Society of Radiology Physician Extenders, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, and the Society of Radiology Physician Extenders. The proposal is currently in the state Senate for consideration.
If the bill passes, Utah would become the 30th state to add advanced-practice medical imaging professionals among its licensed or recognized professions.
