The Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance (MITA) has sent a letter to congressional officials urging them to fully repeal the medical device tax before January 29, when medical device manufacturers are required to resume making payments on the tax after a two-year suspension.
The 2.3% medical device excise tax was levied on the sale of medical devices, and in 2015, a bipartisan coalition in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate approved a two-year suspension of the tax. The suspension expired in December.
In the letter to House and Senate leaders, MITA said fully repealing the device tax before the first payment is due on January 29 would mitigate disruption to the medical imaging industry's innovation, investment in research and development (R&D), and hiring of U.S.-based employees, all of which were accelerated during the suspension of the tax.
