Siemens Healthineers and World Athletics have teamed up to help event medical teams with point-of-care (POC) testing and diagnostic imaging.
Siemens Healthineers’ epoc Blood Analysis System and Acuson Sequoia ultrasound system are being used for medical care during endurance events such as marathons, racewalking, and trail and mountain running, where medical teams provide immediate and specialized care in sometimes remote locations, Siemens and World Athletics said.

Race directors and medical teams are now prioritizing onsite testing to minimize delays in care decisions associated with transporting athletes during these events to hospitals for diagnostics, the partners explained. Diagnostics and imaging performed onsite minimize time to diagnosis, reduce the need for hospital transfers, and enable athletes and teams to have immediate information about injuries, as well as enabling a more discreet, athlete-centered approach.
Siemens Healthineers provided blood POC testing and diagnostic imaging for musculoskeletal injuries at three major global sporting events in 2025, including the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, the partners added.
At the World Athletics Championship Tokyo 25, epoc was used to analyze blood samples for critical markers, including electrolytes, lactate, pH, and creatinine, to treat dehydration or overhydration and manage heat-related illnesses, as part of a study on elite athlete heat adaptation and hydration strategies. Sports science faculty from Waseda University in Saitama, Japan, assisted with the collection.
Results from the study are anticipated in the coming months, Siemens and World Health said.
