Salaries for U.S. radiologists exceeded the $400,000 mark regardless of the type of imaging modality they subspecialized in for the first time in 2019, according to the latest numbers from SalaryScan, AuntMinnie.com's annual survey of benefits and compensation in radiology.
Of the six imaging modalities covered in the SalaryScan survey, every discipline saw radiologists making an average base salary over $400,000, according to the SalaryScan data. In the previous edition of SalaryScan, only one area of subspecialization -- interventional radiology -- saw salaries over the $400,000 mark.
What's more, the average base salary for all imaging modalities was $408,023 in 2019, compared with an average base salary of $394,034 in 2018. Mammography unseated interventional radiology as the top subspecialty in 2019, with mammography specialists enjoying an average base salary of $442,533.
On a geographic basis, radiologists in all but two regions tracked by SalaryScan saw average base salaries over $400,000. Leading the pack were radiologists in the U.S. East South Central region, with an average base salary of $467,000, followed by radiologists in the U.S. Middle Atlantic at $463,826.
As in past SalaryScan surveys, the lowest salaries were paid to radiologists in the U.S. New England region with an average base salary of $348,804. Next from the bottom were radiologists in the U.S. South Atlantic at $366,912, and then the U.S. Pacific region at $405,017.
When it comes to radiologic technologists (RTs), the SalaryScan data indicate that RTs hit a milestone of their own in 2019, with every area of subspecialization recording average base salaries higher than $70,000 a year. At the top were nuclear medicine/PET technologists with an average base salary of $86,702, followed by ultrasound technologists at $78,227. At the back of the back were mammography technologists with an average base salary of $71,782.
On a regional basis, the numbers were flipped compared with radiologists, with the most lucrative regions for RTs being the U.S. Pacific and U.S. New England. RTs on the West Coast saw an average annual salary of $93,205, while those in New England enjoyed an average salary of $80,447.
At the other end of the scale were RTs in the U.S. East North Central region with an average annual salary of $65,476 and those in the U.S. Middle Atlantic states at $67,331.
