SPC presents remote servicing white paper

The joint NEMA/COCIR/JIRA security and privacy committee is presenting a white paper on the remote servicing of medical imaging technology at this week’s RSNA meeting.

Called "Remote service interface solution (A): IPSec over the Internet using digital certificates," the white paper provides a guideline to healthcare providers and vendors on how to implement remote servicing of medical imaging technology in a standardized and secure way, according to the committee.

As a solution to the varying and independent levels of security employed in today's remote servicing implementations, the SPC recommends the use of Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) to set up a virtual private network (VPN) between the remote service center and the healthcare facility. The white paper also includes a list of necessary hardware, software, and configuration requirements for the VPN access points.

The paper has been approved by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), European Coordination Committee of the Radiological and Electromedical Industry (COCIR), and Japan Industries Association of Radiation Apparatus (JIRA). It's available for viewing at www.nema.org/medical.
