Primer on MR Imaging of the Abdomen and Pelvis

Primer on MR Imaging of the Abdomen and Pelvis by Diego R. Martin, Michele A. Brown, and Richard C. Semelka
John Wiley & Sons, Hoboken, NJ, 2005, $59.95

This book provides an overview of abdominal and pelvic MRI. The text is in outline format with high-yield bullets of information, but it's not a comprehensive review of abdominal and pelvic pathology.

Organized according to organ system, there are chapters on the major abdominal organs; male and female pelvis; as well as more specific chapters on the peritoneum, retroperitoneum, gastrointestinal tract and bladder.

The female pelvis chapter contains short sections on fetal MR imaging and MRI of the pregnant patient. There is an introductory chapter on technical factors and MR sequences. More detailed protocol information, with modifications for specific clinical conditions, is provided in each chapter.

For each major topic, a few sentences of background information are given before imaging findings are discussed. In addition to pathology, topics covered include normal anatomy, normal variations, and mimickers of pathology.

The strength of this book is the large number of high quality images with detailed captions. For the more common entities, several examples are often provided. The trade- off for volume of images is their small size. Primer on MR Imaging of the Abdomen and Pelvis may be particularly useful as a quick reference for imaging protocols.
