Breast Imaging: The Requisites by Debra Ikeda, 2nd edition

This text provides a nice overview of breast imaging, and is a more than adequate resource for a resident in need of an introductory text. The 335-page book can easily be read during a month-long mammography rotation.
Breast Imaging: The Requisites is organized according to modality and mammographic findings (analysis of breast calcifications, analysis of breast masses), rather than by pathology as many mammography texts are organized.
The book's strengths are high quality images, a manageable volume of information, and up-to-date discussions of clinical issues. Particularly noteworthy is the inclusion of data from the 2003 Women’s Health Initiative, a study of breast cancer epidemiology and risk factors, as well as evaluation of the post-operative breast.
The technical aspects of breast imaging are current and expertly covered, including full- field digital mammography, computer-aided detection, breast ultrasound, and image-guided procedures. The chapter on breast MRI provides an excellent discussion of protocols, normal and pathologic findings, approaches to breast lesions and the ACR Breast MRI lexicon. There is also a discussion on the limitations of MRI.
The weaknesses of this book lie in some of the details. For example, there are discrepancies between information contained within the text and information provided in tables and illustrative cases. Some of the images contain very subtle findings that should be annotated for clarity.
Breast Imaging: The Requisites is highly recommended reference for radiology residents and practitioners who desire a digest of the art of breast imaging.
