Week in Review: Impact of trade war on radiology | Jury award | PET shows how music affects brain

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

As part of a retaliation against new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, China announced that it would limit export of rare earth elements, including several used in medical imaging and treatments: gadolinium, lutetium, and yttrium. It also launched investigations related to imports of CT x-ray tubes. Our coverage of the news was our most highly viewed article of the week.

At #2 on the list was our report on a missed teleradiology read that led to a $15.5 million jury award in a malpractice lawsuit. What’s more, PET also revealed for the first time how music affects the brain’s opioid receptor system.

Research on Alzheimer’s disease figured prominently in this week’s top stories. First, a metabolic MRI method was shown to offer potential in Alzheimer’s patients. A study involving PET scans linked depressive symptoms to Alzheimer’s brain pathology. And having a father with Alzheimer’s could mean higher risk for the disease.

Our series covering the first x-ray image taken in space was also popular among AuntMinnie members. Part II and Part III both made the top 10.
