Toshiba launches 16-slice cardiac CT scanner

Multimodality vendor Toshiba America Medical Systems is introducing Aquilion 16 CFX, a new version of its Aquilion 16-slice CT scanner. The Aquilion 16 CFX features 400-millisecond scanning to capture anatomical images of the heart, and a new cardiac function analysis software package, SureCardio, to perform enhanced scanning and reconstruction functions for cardiac examinations.

The product features the Tustin, CA-based vendor’s selectable slice-thickness multi-row detector (SSMD) technology that allows up to seven varying image-slice thicknesses, from 0.5 mm to 8 mm, which can be selected based on the objectives of the examination. Aquilion 16 CFX generates up to 40 slices per second using SSMD, and permits 16 0.5-mm images to be acquired per 400-ms gantry rotation for volumetric data acquisition.

The SureCardio package enables the scanner to produce multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) images, volume curves, and polar maps, as well as wall-motion analysis and functional parameter calculations. In addition, it selects the optimum acquisition parameter automatically based on a patient’s heart rate.

The system also uses Toshiba’s helical reconstruction technique, RealConeView, which compensates for the cone angle based on the Feldkamp method. This allows Aquilion 16 CFX to eliminate artifacts related to the cone angle, providing accurate, high-resolution isotropic images over the entire imaging field, according to the vendor.

The 400-ms scanning capability and the SureCardio package are included in the standard configuration of Aquilion 16 CFX, Toshiba said.

Aquilion 16 CFX also features an optional CT fluoroscopy package for multislice CT, with real-time image reconstruction capable of displaying three images obtained by combining data from the SSMD. The scanner’s CT fluoroscopy package is designed to improve operability in biopsy and interventional procedures, said the firm.
