Instrumentarium makes ECR launch of portable DR unit

VIENNA - Finnish imaging vendor Instrumentarium Imaging is highlighting a new portable digital radiography system at this week's European Congress of Radiology. The system, called Shuttle, features an amorphous silicon flat-panel detector developed by Canon Medical Systems of Japan.

Shuttle takes Canon's CXDI-31 flat-panel sensor and attaches it to a tether that's connected to a portable x-ray unit. Images collected with the detector can be viewed for quality assurance on a small flat-panel monitor mounted on Shuttle, and the unit also features local image storage until the system can returned to a network for image printing or soft-copy review.

Canon introduced CXDI-31 at the 2001 RSNA meeting as a highly versatile panel that can be hand-carried to a patient and used in a variety of positions that are difficult to employ with more traditional x-ray systems. The panel comes in either 35 x 43-cm or 23 x 29-cm sizes, with a 100-micron pixel pitch. Shuttle features an x-ray generator with a maximum output of 32 kW, 0.5-400 mAs, and 40-135 kV.

Instrumentarium will be Shuttle's exclusive distributor; Canon does not plan to sell the unit itself. Instrumentarium is targeting the system at remote applications like intensive-care unit and emergency room environments. The system is being displayed at the ECR as a work-in-progress.
