AuntMinnie.com Digital X-Ray Insider

Dear Digital X-Ray Insider,

Slot scanning is an approach to digital radiography (DR) design that's been used in several systems over the years, primarily mammography units. Advocates believe that slot scanning can offer lower radiation dose with image quality that's equivalent to or better than conventional DR designs.

A group of Canadian researchers test that hypothesis in an article we're featuring this week as our Insider Exclusive. In the story, researchers from Montreal test a new type of slot-scanning DR system designed for musculoskeletal work and compare it to a computed radiography system, analyzing both radiation dose and image quality.

You'll find a number of other stories on cutting-edge DR technology in this edition. Swedish researchers found that a DR-based tomosynthesis system produced better sensitivity in detecting pulmonary nodules, particularly those smaller than 9 mm. That article is available by clicking here.

Another recent article found that an iso-osmolar contrast medium didn't offer greater protection against nephrotoxicity than a low-osmolar version -- except possibly in patients with diabetes. That story is available here.
