Medtronic starts carotid stent clinical trials

Medical device manufacturer Medtronic has begun enrolling patients for a clinical trial to evaluate the safety and performance of its Exponent self-expanding carotid stent system. The stent system will be used in conjunction with the firm’s embolic protection device --the GuardWire temporary occlusion and aspiration system -- to assess the safety and efficacy of carotid stenting with carotid artery stenosis, according to the Minneapolis-based firm.

The clinical trials will be led by Dr. Stephen Ramee, director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, and Dr. Randall Higashida, clinical professor of radiology and neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.
