Dear AuntMinnie Member,
A California gynecologist has riled interventional radiologists with a journal article stating that ob/gyns are better suited for performing uterine artery embolization (UAE), an interventional procedure finding favor as a less-invasive alternative to hysterectomy. Interventionalists have fired back with a rebuttal article criticizing as inadequate a proposed program for training ob/gyns to perform UAE.
According to the article in our Women's Imaging Digital Community by staff writer Shalmali Pal, Dr. Bruce McLucas from the University of California, Los Angeles has laid out both the arguments for ob/gyn control of UAE, and a training program to help them accomplish it. Dr. McLucas believes that ob/gyns are more familiar with pelvic vascular anatomy and are better able to provide post-procedure care.
Not surprisingly, interventional rads aren't impressed with the arguments. They have found fault with a training program that McLucas has proposed for ob/gyns, and have reiterated the arguments for keeping UAE within interventional radiology's domain.
But have interventional radiologists themselves planted the seeds that could lead to their loss of UAE procedures? Find out in our Women's Imaging Digital Community, at http://womens.auntminnie.com/.
