Vascular & Interventional Radiology: The Requisites

Vascular & Interventional Radiology: The Requisites by John A. Kaufman
and Michael J. Lee
ElsevierScience, St. Louis, 2004, $95

Kaufman and Lee have succeeded in creating a text that is user friendly, informative and accessible. For the newcomer, this text covers each area with sufficient detail, providing an overview of the pathologies and techniques specific to each organ system. For the experienced resident and radiologist, it provides a review of pathology and techniques frequently found on written and oral board exams, as well as in daily practice.

The text opens with the core of interventional radiology, the vascular tree. A review of normal vascular anatomy and its pathologic alterations are addressed. This is followed by an appropriately detailed discussion, with ample illustrations and images, of the tools, techniques and treatments employed in an active interventional practice. Alternative and image-guiding modalities employed in current practice are also presented.

The subsequent chapters cover IR procedures from the ordinary to the sexy. Honoring the unique hybrid nature of this profession (diagnostics and therapeutics), this text provides the current classification schemes unique to each pathology with ample review of indications and contraindications for intervention and expected outcomes.

With its elegant dissection of each disease and treatment, the radiologist will likely feel well prepared to bring a patient from pretreatment counseling to the recovery room by the time he has reached the conclusion of each chapter. It is unlikely that many questions regarding the disease or treatment specific to each patient could not be found in this text.

Adhering to the effective format of The Requisites series, these authors have created a quality reference to enhance the interventional radiology library.
