The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) of Chicago has published a Manufacturers Disclosure Statement for Medical Device Security (MDS2), a form completed by manufacturers that healthcare providers can use to assess medical device security risks, including those related to HIPAA compliance.
According to HIMSS, vendors such as GE Healthcare and Philips Medical Systems are already making use of the industry-endorsed form for both new and legacy devices. The MDS2 has been endorsed by HIMSS, the American College of Clinical Engineering, and the medical device section of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).
The MDS2 form and instructions for its use are available on the HIMSS Web site.
