Astronauts credit portable ultrasound machine for ISS medical event

Astronauts are crediting a portable ultrasound machine for helping manage a medical event aboard the International Space Station (ISS), according to a January 21 article by ABC News.

In a press briefing, NASA stated the crew used the machine to address the medical problem, which was not disclosed, on January 7, one day before a planned spacewalk.

The astronauts said they had already used the ultrasound machine for routine body checks, calling it "super handy," the article stated. The crew launched in August 2025 from Florida and returned to Earth's surface off the coast of San Diego, CA, in January.

NASA leaders said portable ultrasound machines should be used for future missions.
