Ultrasound MinnieCast, Episode 5: How POCUS is reshaping care

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) continues to gain steam in clinical use, owing to its versatility, convenience, and strong diagnostic performance as shown in recent studies.

However, challenges in implementation and training remain. Experts have noted inconsistent training across residency programs and institutions.

Christine Schutzer joins this week's episode to discuss POCUS' advantages, emerging applications, and the need for standardization in training. Schutzer is the director of operations for the POCUS Program at Oregon Health & Science University. She is also a board member and fellow for the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM).

Christine Schutzer discusses the need for standardization among POCUS educators.

Schutzer also talks about her time teaching POCUS to midwives in the Philippines. This included performing basic obstetric ultrasound to identify life-threatening situations for expecting mothers and making sure clinics are supported in the long run.

Schutzer also discusses what she is looking forward to at the upcoming AIUM annual meeting in May, which will be held in Philadelphia, PA. She will also serve as course director for the AIUM's upcoming POCUS Course in Portland, OR.
