Ultrasound MinnieCast, Episode 6: Challenges in thyroid imaging

Thyroid imaging continues to be challenging for radiologists, and recent research challenges the prevalent use of thyroid ultrasound.

One JAMA study published in February suggested that reducing ultrasound referrals for nonpalpable nodules could help address thyroid cancer overdiagnosis.

But head and neck imagers may have reason for optimism. Franklin Tessler, MD, joins the show this week to discuss current challenges in this area. Tessler codeveloped the American College of Radiology (ACR) TI-RADS system, first released in 2017.

Since then, he has remained active in thyroid ultrasound, even as he enjoys retirement after his role at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as vice chair of radiology informatics.

Franklin Tessler, MD, explains how head and neck radiologists can avoid pitfalls in imaging and interpreting ultrasound findings.

Tessler also shares his thoughts on how AI can help address thyroid imaging challenges and provides a brief sneak peek into what radiologists can expect from the upcoming new edition of TI-RADS planned for later in 2026.
