Mammography vendor Fischer Imaging and the ultrasound division of Bothell, WA-based Philips Medical Systems are collaborating to develop a prototype system to simultaneously acquire breast ultrasound and digital mammography images.
In support of the initiative, Denver-based Fischer has received a $468,000 phase I Small Business Innovation Research grant from the National Cancer Institute. The grant will be used to conduct feasibility studies for the development of an integrated ultrasound and digital mammography system, according to the companies. If the research is successful, a product would still be several years away, said Fischer CEO Harris Ravine.
