U.S. House bill filed for minimum mammo fees

Legislation has been introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives that would establish a minimum fee for mammography services.

The Assure Access to Mammography Act of 2008, filed by U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY), would hike the 2009 fee schedule for mammography to at least 115% of the 2008 fee schedule.

Fees also would be based on the Medicare economic index (MEI) and subject to "geographic area adjustment in the same manner as for other physician services."

The legislation was sent to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Ways and Means.
