Lobular breast cancer is the second-most common form of breast cancer, but by a lengthy distance over ductal carcinoma, so much so that about four out of five women are not aware of the disease.
The Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance (LBCA) aims to address this with a nationwide bus tour with a call to action: It's Time to Talk About Lobular Breast Cancer. The tour starts September 26, with the bus traveling from San Francisco to Boston. It will feature the faces of women who have faced the disease and provide key data points during its stops.
Laurie Hutcheson, executive director and patient advocate for the LBCA, and Manisha Bahl, MD, from Mass General Brigham in Massachusetts join the show to talk about the tour and why lobular breast cancer is challenging to find and treat.
Laurie Hutcheson shares what led to the LBCA leading its nationwide bus tour, including what data says about lobular breast cancer awareness.
The two share survey data that points to a lack of awareness of lobular breast cancer. Bahl also discusses current and emerging approaches toward imaging this disease in women. Bahl's research into invasive lobular carcinoma shaped some educational resources the LBCA has available.
