GE Medical Systems reported 15% growth in sales in the first quarter (end-March 31), with the Waukesha, WI, division posting revenues of $2.14 billion, up 15% compared with sales of $1.863 billion in the same period the year before.
Profit also grew 15%, with the unit reporting a net profit of $306 million, compared with a net profit of $266 million in the first quarter of 2002.
Among the highlights, GE said ultrasound orders were up 25% to $171 million, due to the strength of the company’s Voluson 730 4-D scanner and LogiqBook portable system. The company booked 125 orders for its LightSpeed 16 multislice CT system, bringing the total number of orders for the product to 466 since its introduction in June 2002.
Orders at the company’s GEMS Information Technology unit were up 24%, led by 45% growth in PACS orders and 25% growth in wireless patient monitoring orders. In surgical and vascular imaging, orders were up 18% to $164 million, with 18 orders for the new Innova 4100 system occurring during the period. Medical services orders grew 16% to $993 million.
Total GEMS orders for the first quarter were $2.1 billion, up 12% compared with the first quarter of 2002.
