RT wages show big jump

Wages for radiologic technologists in the U.S. have shown strong growth over the last three years, according to a recent salary survey by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) of Albuquerque, NM.

The survey found the average annual salary for RTs to be $65,401, representing growth of 26.5% since 2001, while the average hourly wage was $24.16, a 19.7% increase over the same time period.

The society said the growth reflected continued strong demand for skilled professionals as radiology departments compete for a limited supply of technologists, according to Lynn May, the ASRT's CEO.

RTs in California reported the highest average hourly wage, at $30.03 an hour, followed by Washington, DC, at $29.67 an hour, and Massachusetts at $28.88 an hour. The lowest hourly wages were in West Virginia, at $19.22 an hour; Alabama, at $19.76 an hour; and North Dakota, at $19.79 an hour.

The survey was sent in January to a random sample of registrants with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in each of the 50 states and Washington, DC. A total of 8,438 completed questionnaires were returned, according to the society.
