The chairman of the department of radiology at the University of San Francisco (UCSF), Dr. Ronald Arenson, has retired after serving in the position for the past 25 years.

After completing his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and serving in the U.S. Navy at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, he joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was associate chairman of clinical services in the department of radiology.
Medical informatics was one of Arenson's major areas of focus. He was named chairman of UCSF's radiology department in 1992, and one of his first tasks was the implementation of a PACS network at a time when most institutions were still based on analog imaging.
Arenson's career accomplishments include serving as president of the RSNA in 2015, where he delivered the keynote speech on the need for radiology to use technology to adapt to major changes in healthcare, as well as giving the keynote talk at the 2008 Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine meeting.
Arenson also served a term on the advisory council of the U.S. National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Council of Councils. He also served as president of the Association of University Radiologists, the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments, and the Academy of Radiology Research.
