The only competition worthy of a wise man is with himself. -- Washington Allston

Dear Cardiac Imaging Insider,

Much has been made of the battle for heart imaging, which many radiologists and cardiologists alike consider a natural part of their practices. Radiologists, still sore from having been squeezed out of invasive angiography and echocardiography in decades past, are eager to avoid a similar fate in the fast-emerging field of coronary CT angiography.

Our last Cardiac Imaging Insider featured a talk by Dr. Gabriel Krestin, professor and chairman of radiology at Erasmus Medical University in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In a story widely read and commented on, Krestin argued that formal collaboration with cardiologists and an intensive commitment to research are the only hope for radiologists who are loath to see imaging history repeat itself.

In this Insider, Dr. David Levin from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia calls Krestin's views overly pessimistic -- and says that from a patient flow perspective, cardiologists can't hope to achieve the patient volumes that naturally inure to radiologists. In his own response, Krestin begs to differ.

We invite you to decide for yourself as you page through Krestin's original talk, Levin's rebuttal (the subject of our Insider Exclusive story), and Krestin's cautionary response. We've yet to hear from a cardiologist who wants to write about the other side of the coin, but you never know.
