Nonprofit technology research firm ECRI Institute has published a market report for hospitals that contains planning guidelines and pricing of hybrid operating rooms (OR) equipped with angiography systems.
ECRI predicts that 75% of cardiovascular surgeons will work in a hybrid operating suite by 2018. Surgeons want to have the ability to perform new combinations of endovascular, laprascopic, and open procedures in an operating room using advanced angiography image guidance. ECRI advises that because image-guided minimally invasive surgery will be common in the future, most hospitals will benefit by planning for a hybrid OR.
In addition to providing an operating suite for high-risk, minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures, hybrid operating rooms can be used for procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting or open aortic aneurysm repair, which previously have been performed in dedicated cardiovascular operating rooms. They can also be used to perform cath lab procedures, such as percutaneous coronary intervention and balloon valvuloplasty.
The report describes typical room and equipment requirements, average cost of angiography imaging systems from four leading modality vendors, and overall estimated project costs. ECRI also includes a checklist of recommendations for a hospital's successful acquisition and installation of a hybrid operating room.
Angiography vendors profiled include GE Healthcare, Philips Healthcare, Siemens Healthcare, and Toshiba America Medical Systems.
