Nuclear physicians lose ground in thyroid; top 10 stories of the decade

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Are nuclear medicine physicians losing control of therapeutic radioiodine procedures for thyroid conditions to endocrinologists? That's the implication from a new study we're featuring this week in our Molecular Imaging Digital Community.

The study implies that changes made a decade ago to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's certification requirements for radioiodine procedures have resulted in more endocrinologists performing the studies -- at the expense of nuclear medicine physicians. How much ground have they lost? Find out by clicking here.

In other molecular imaging news, learn about research from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio on whether a second PET scan can help localize seizure origin in some patients with refractory epilepsy. Find out what criteria you should use for recommending a second scan by clicking here.

A year-end thank you

Finally, with this last Letter from the Editor newsletter of 2009, we'd like to take a moment to thank all of you for your support over the past year, and indeed, over the past 10 years.

AuntMinnie.com was launched in 1999 with the goal of creating a vibrant online community for radiology professionals. A decade later, we feel we've largely accomplished that goal, with your help. In the next year we will most likely see AuntMinnie.com surpass 150,000 registered active members, a remarkable milestone.

That said, 2009 was a bittersweet year for many of us. Driven by the economic crisis, healthcare reform, and other market trends, radiology seems to be changing irrevocably, moving from a familiar past into an uncertain future. AuntMinnie.com also lost its founder in 2009, as the late Dr. Phillip Berman passed away in February after a five-year battle with lung cancer.

We usually take this time to review the top 10 radiology stories of the year, but this time we'd like to offer a twist: the top 10 stories of the decade, as measured by member page views on AuntMinnie.com. Click here to take a look.

Enjoy, and have a happy, safe, and prosperous new year!
